A creamy and flavorful white gravy made with basic pantry ingredients, perfect for biscuits, fried chicken, or mashed potatoes.
Ingredients
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder (optional)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to form a roux.
- Slowly whisk in the milk, continuing to stir to avoid lumps.
- Cook and stir the mixture until it thickens and begins to bubble, about 5-7 minutes.
- Season with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder if using.
- Remove from heat and serve warm over your favorite dishes.
Notes
- Use whole milk for the creamiest texture, but low-fat milk can also be used.
- Add cooked sausage or bacon bits for extra flavor.
- Leftover gravy can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
