Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups day-old bread cubes
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 2 large eggs
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a large baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, melt butter over medium heat.
  3. Add chopped onions and celery; cook until softened, about 10 minutes.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, combine bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, parsley, sage, thyme, and rosemary.
  5. Whisk eggs and broth together, then pour over bread mixture, stirring gently to combine.
  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  7. Transfer to prepared baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 30 minutes.
  8. Uncover and bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until top is golden brown.

Notes

  • Add cooked sausage or bacon for a heartier version.
  • Include chopped apples or dried cranberries for sweetness.
  • Use cornbread for a Southern twist.
  • Incorporate nuts like pecans or walnuts for texture.
  • Make it vegetarian by using vegetable broth and omitting meat.
