Description

Creamy, cheesy scalloped potatoes baked until golden and bubbly – a classic comfort food side dish perfect for holidays or family dinners.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 4 large russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream. Cook, stirring constantly, until the mixture thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Stir in the cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  5. Layer half the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour over half of the cheese sauce.
  6. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese sauce.
  7. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the top.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  9. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for evenly thin potato slices.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated.
  • Add ham or bacon for a heartier dish.
