Description

Creamy, cheesy, and full of comfort—Potatoes Au Gratin is a classic side dish made with thinly sliced potatoes, rich cream, and melted cheese baked to golden perfection. It’s a crowd-pleasing favorite for holidays or weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

  • 2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese

  • 1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (optional but recommended)

  • 2 cups heavy cream

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.

  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and sauté garlic until fragrant (about 1 minute).

  3. Whisk in flour and cook for another minute to form a roux.

  4. Slowly add heavy cream, whisking continuously until smooth and slightly thickened.

  5. Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Remove from heat and mix in 1 cup of cheddar and ½ cup of Gruyère until melted.

  6. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the cheese sauce over the potatoes.

  7. Repeat with remaining potatoes and pour over the rest of the sauce.

  8. Sprinkle the top with remaining cheddar and Gruyère.

  9. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until top is golden and bubbly.

  10. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or cooked bacon between the layers.

  • You can use Yukon Gold potatoes for a creamier texture.

  • Try substituting Gruyère with mozzarella or Parmesan if needed.
