Ingredients
-
2 lbs russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
-
2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
-
1 cup grated Gruyère cheese (optional but recommended)
-
2 cups heavy cream
-
3 tbsp unsalted butter
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
1 tsp salt
-
1/2 tsp black pepper
-
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
-
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
Fresh parsley for garnish (optional)
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
-
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt butter and sauté garlic until fragrant (about 1 minute).
-
Whisk in flour and cook for another minute to form a roux.
-
Slowly add heavy cream, whisking continuously until smooth and slightly thickened.
-
Stir in salt, pepper, and nutmeg. Remove from heat and mix in 1 cup of cheddar and ½ cup of Gruyère until melted.
-
Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish. Pour half the cheese sauce over the potatoes.
-
Repeat with remaining potatoes and pour over the rest of the sauce.
-
Sprinkle the top with remaining cheddar and Gruyère.
-
Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes, until top is golden and bubbly.
-
Let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
Notes
-
For extra flavor, add sautéed onions or cooked bacon between the layers.
-
You can use Yukon Gold potatoes for a creamier texture.
-
Try substituting Gruyère with mozzarella or Parmesan if needed.
