Description

A baked twist on the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, this casserole layers ham, turkey, cheese, and bread in a savory custard, perfect for breakfast or brunch.

Ingredients

  • 8 slices white bread, crusts removed
  • 6 slices deli ham
  • 6 slices deli turkey
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for topping)
  • Maple syrup or raspberry jam (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Layer 4 slices of bread in the bottom of the dish.
  3. Top with ham slices, followed by turkey slices, then cheese.
  4. Add the remaining 4 slices of bread to create a sandwich layer.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers.
  7. Press down lightly to ensure the bread soaks up the custard.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until golden and set.
  10. Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve with syrup or jam.

Notes

  • Best when assembled the night before and refrigerated.
  • Can substitute Swiss cheese with Gruyère or cheddar.
  • Great use for leftover holiday ham or turkey.
