A baked twist on the classic Monte Cristo sandwich, this casserole layers ham, turkey, cheese, and bread in a savory custard, perfect for breakfast or brunch.
Ingredients
- 8 slices white bread, crusts removed
- 6 slices deli ham
- 6 slices deli turkey
- 6 slices Swiss cheese
- 4 large eggs
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (optional, for topping)
- Maple syrup or raspberry jam (optional, for serving)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
- Layer 4 slices of bread in the bottom of the dish.
- Top with ham slices, followed by turkey slices, then cheese.
- Add the remaining 4 slices of bread to create a sandwich layer.
- In a bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread layers.
- Press down lightly to ensure the bread soaks up the custard.
- Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake for another 20-25 minutes, or until golden and set.
- Let cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar if desired and serve with syrup or jam.
Notes
- Best when assembled the night before and refrigerated.
- Can substitute Swiss cheese with Gruyère or cheddar.
- Great use for leftover holiday ham or turkey.
