Description

Creamy, naturally sweet mashed sweet potatoes that can be customized with savory or sweet additions, perfect for holidays or everyday meals.


Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 to 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk or heavy cream (more as needed)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • Optional: 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Optional: 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon maple syrup

Instructions

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into chunks.
  2. Place in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender.
  3. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot or a large bowl.
  4. Add butter, buttermilk or heavy cream, salt, and pepper.
  5. Mash until smooth using a masher or mixer. Add more liquid if needed for desired texture.
  6. Taste and adjust seasoning. Stir in optional spices or sweeteners if desired.
  7. Serve warm.
