- 2 1/2 to 3 pounds sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped
- 4 tablespoons butter
- 1/3 cup buttermilk or heavy cream (more as needed)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional: 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Optional: 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
- Optional: 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Optional: 1 tablespoon maple syrup
Instructions
- Peel the sweet potatoes and cut them into chunks.
- Place in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Cook for 15-20 minutes, or until fork-tender.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot or a large bowl.
- Add butter, buttermilk or heavy cream, salt, and pepper.
- Mash until smooth using a masher or mixer. Add more liquid if needed for desired texture.
- Taste and adjust seasoning. Stir in optional spices or sweeteners if desired.
- Serve warm.
