Description

Creamy, naturally sweet, and comforting mashed sweet potatoes that are perfect as a side dish for any occasion, from holiday meals to simple weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 to 2.5 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 24 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 to 1/2 cup buttermilk or cream (adjust for desired consistency)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
  • 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 12 tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar (optional, for added sweetness)

Instructions

  1. Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks.
  2. Place them in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat.
  3. Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
  4. Drain the sweet potatoes and return them to the pot.
  5. Add the butter, buttermilk or cream, salt, and optional spices or sweeteners.
  6. Mash until smooth using a potato masher or hand mixer, adjusting the milk for your preferred consistency.
  7. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
  8. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with a pat of butter or sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.

Notes

  • Use coconut milk and vegan butter for a dairy-free version.
  • Add roasted garlic or caramelized onions for extra savory depth.
  • Top with mini marshmallows and broil briefly for a holiday-style casserole.
  • Mix in orange zest for a bright, citrusy flavor.
  • Sprinkle with chopped pecans or walnuts for added texture.
