- 2 to 2.5 lbs sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 2–4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/4 to 1/2 cup buttermilk or cream (adjust for desired consistency)
- 1/2 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1–2 tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar (optional, for added sweetness)
Instructions
- Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks.
- Place them in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil over high heat.
- Reduce heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the sweet potatoes are tender when pierced with a fork.
- Drain the sweet potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add the butter, buttermilk or cream, salt, and optional spices or sweeteners.
- Mash until smooth using a potato masher or hand mixer, adjusting the milk for your preferred consistency.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed.
- Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with a pat of butter or sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired.

- Use coconut milk and vegan butter for a dairy-free version.
- Add roasted garlic or caramelized onions for extra savory depth.
- Top with mini marshmallows and broil briefly for a holiday-style casserole.
