Instructions
- Peel and cut the potatoes into evenly sized chunks.
- Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with cold water. Add a generous pinch of salt.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, about 15-20 minutes.
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add butter, warm milk or cream, and any optional ingredients like garlic or cream cheese.
- Mash using a potato masher or hand mixer until smooth and creamy.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve hot with a pat of butter on top if desired.

- Chopped chives, green onions, or shredded cheese can be mixed in for variation.
