Description
Huli Huli Chicken Wings are a Hawaiian-inspired dish featuring crispy wings marinated in a sweet and tangy sauce made from pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, and ginger, then grilled to perfection.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds chicken wings
- 1/2 cup pineapple juice
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
- 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening sauce)
- 2 tablespoons water (if using cornstarch)
- Chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, and black pepper to make the marinade.
- Reserve 1/4 cup of the marinade for basting and refrigerate it.
- Place chicken wings in a large zip-top bag or bowl and pour the marinade over them. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor.
- Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Remove wings from marinade and discard used marinade.
- Grill wings for about 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally and basting with the reserved marinade until the wings are cooked through and nicely charred.
- If desired, thicken the reserved marinade by heating it in a small saucepan. Mix cornstarch with water and stir into the sauce. Simmer until thickened.
- Serve wings hot, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds if desired.
Notes
- Marinating overnight gives the best flavor.
- You can bake the wings at 400°F (200°C) for 40-45 minutes if a grill is not available.
- Make extra sauce to use as a dip.
- For spicier wings, add some sriracha or chili flakes to the marinade.
