Description

Huli Huli Chicken Wings are a Hawaiian-inspired dish featuring crispy wings marinated in a sweet and tangy sauce made from pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, and ginger, then grilled to perfection.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds chicken wings
  • 1/2 cup pineapple juice
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening sauce)
  • 2 tablespoons water (if using cornstarch)
  • Chopped green onions and sesame seeds for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together pineapple juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ketchup, rice vinegar, ginger, garlic, sesame oil, and black pepper to make the marinade.
  2. Reserve 1/4 cup of the marinade for basting and refrigerate it.
  3. Place chicken wings in a large zip-top bag or bowl and pour the marinade over them. Seal or cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight for best flavor.
  4. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Remove wings from marinade and discard used marinade.
  5. Grill wings for about 20-25 minutes, turning occasionally and basting with the reserved marinade until the wings are cooked through and nicely charred.
  6. If desired, thicken the reserved marinade by heating it in a small saucepan. Mix cornstarch with water and stir into the sauce. Simmer until thickened.
  7. Serve wings hot, garnished with green onions and sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • Marinating overnight gives the best flavor.
  • You can bake the wings at 400°F (200°C) for 40-45 minutes if a grill is not available.
  • Make extra sauce to use as a dip.
  • For spicier wings, add some sriracha or chili flakes to the marinade.
