Description

Chewy on the outside, soft on the inside, these pretzel rolls are perfect for sandwiches, sides, or snacks. A classic pretzel flavor in the form of fresh-baked bread rolls.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling water)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Coarse sea salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and brown sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour, salt, and melted butter. Mix and knead until a soft dough forms.
  3. Cover and let rise for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape into rolls.
  6. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and carefully add baking soda.
  7. Boil each roll for 30 seconds on each side, then transfer to the baking sheet.
  8. Brush each roll with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
  9. Bake for 18-22 minutes or until deep golden brown.
  10. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Add shredded cheese before baking for a cheesy twist.
  • Try stuffing with ham and cheese before baking for a hearty snack.
  • Use cinnamon sugar instead of salt for a sweet version.
  • Whole wheat flour can be substituted for a denser texture.
