A classic homemade lasagna layered with rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and melted cheese for a hearty, comforting Italian dish.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 (6-ounce) cans tomato paste
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 lasagna noodles
  • 15 ounces ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil and sauté onion and garlic until fragrant.
  3. Add ground beef and Italian sausage, cook until browned. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, basil, parsley, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 30 minutes.
  5. Boil lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.
  6. In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese with egg and a bit of parsley.
  7. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  8. Layer with noodles, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers, ending with mozzarella and Parmesan on top.
  9. Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
  10. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until cheese is golden and bubbly.
  11. Let rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can make the meat sauce a day ahead for deeper flavor.
  • Use oven-ready noodles to save time.
  • Substitute cottage cheese for ricotta if desired.
  • Lasagna freezes well for future meals.
