Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
- 1 cup warm milk (about 110°F/43°C)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened (plus more for brushing)
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 large eggs
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
- Add softened butter, eggs, and salt to the yeast mixture and stir to combine.
- Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Punch down the dough and divide it into 16 equal portions. Shape each portion into a ball and place on a greased baking dish or tray.
- Cover and let rise again for 30-40 minutes, or until puffy.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Brush the tops with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven for an extra soft and shiny finish.
Notes
- For an herbed version, mix in chopped rosemary or thyme.
- Use honey instead of sugar for a richer sweetness.
- Top with sesame seeds or sea salt for extra texture.
- Shape into knots or braids for special occasions.
