- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold
- 1–2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing tops)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk.
- Stir gently until just combined; avoid overmixing.
- Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface and pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
- Fold dough over itself 2-3 times, then pat it out again.
- Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits and place them close together on the baking sheet.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes until tops are golden brown.
- Brush tops with melted butter after baking.

- Add shredded cheddar and chopped chives for a savory version.
- Add a touch of honey or maple syrup for sweet biscuits.
- Use half whole wheat flour for a heartier texture.
