- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup ketchup
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 8 slices of bread
- 2 tbsp butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
- In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onion and garlic to the skillet, sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Set aside.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Place 4 slices of bread, butter side down, in the skillet. Top each with a generous amount of shredded cheddar cheese, then a scoop of the sloppy joe mixture, followed by more cheese and another slice of bread, butter side up.
- Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula for even grilling.
- Remove from skillet, let cool slightly, then cut and serve.
Notes
- You can use a mix of cheeses for extra flavor.
- Ground turkey or plant-based meat can be substituted for beef.
- Add jalapeños or pickles for a kick.
