Description

A delicious mashup of classic sloppy joes and grilled cheese sandwiches, offering a gooey, savory, and satisfying meal perfect for weeknight dinners.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp yellow mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 8 slices of bread
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess fat.
  2. Add chopped onion and garlic to the skillet, sauté until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5-7 minutes until thickened. Set aside.
  4. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  5. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
  6. Place 4 slices of bread, butter side down, in the skillet. Top each with a generous amount of shredded cheddar cheese, then a scoop of the sloppy joe mixture, followed by more cheese and another slice of bread, butter side up.
  7. Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Press down gently with a spatula for even grilling.
  8. Remove from skillet, let cool slightly, then cut and serve.

Notes

  • You can use a mix of cheeses for extra flavor.
  • Ground turkey or plant-based meat can be substituted for beef.
  • Add jalapeños or pickles for a kick.
