Description

Soft, chewy, and packed with rich cocoa flavor, these frosted chocolate sugar cookies are a fun twist on the classic sugar cookie. Topped with a creamy, sweet frosting and sprinkles if you like, they’re perfect for holidays, parties, or anytime you need a chocolate fix.

Ingredients

For the Cookies:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp baking soda

  • 1/2 tsp salt

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 2 cups powdered sugar

  • 2-3 tbsp milk (as needed for consistency)

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • Pinch of salt

  • Optional: food coloring, sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.

  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until a soft dough forms.

  6. Scoop tablespoon-sized amounts of dough, roll into balls, and place on prepared baking sheets about 2 inches apart.

  7. Flatten each cookie slightly with your hand or the bottom of a glass.

  8. Bake for 8–10 minutes, or until cookies are set around the edges but still soft in the middle. Let cool completely before frosting.

  9. To make the frosting, beat the butter until smooth. Slowly mix in powdered sugar, then add vanilla, salt, and milk a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.

  10. Frost the cooled cookies and add sprinkles if desired.

Notes

  • For deeper chocolate flavor, add 1/2 tsp espresso powder to the dough.

  • Frosting can be tinted with food coloring for different occasions.

  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
