Description

French Onion Ground Beef Casserole is a savory, cheesy comfort food dish made with seasoned ground beef, caramelized onions, creamy sauce, and topped with crispy fried onions and melted cheese. A perfect weeknight family meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 2 cups cooked egg noodles
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella or Swiss cheese
  • 1 cup French fried onions
  • 1/4 cup chopped parsley (optional garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until golden and caramelized, about 15 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute more. Remove from pan and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, brown the ground beef. Season with salt, pepper, and thyme. Drain any excess grease.
  4. Stir in the caramelized onions, cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, and beef broth. Mix until combined.
  5. Fold in the cooked egg noodles and half of the shredded cheese.
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish. Top with remaining cheese and bake uncovered for 20 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle French fried onions on top and bake for another 5–10 minutes, or until golden and bubbly.
  8. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • Use Swiss cheese for a more traditional French onion flavor, or mozzarella for a milder option.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate before baking for a convenient meal prep option.
  • Serve with a side salad or green beans for a complete meal.
