Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
- 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold
- 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk. Stir just until combined; do not overmix.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 4-5 times. Pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
- Cut biscuits using a round cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet close together for softer sides or apart for crispier edges.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Brush the tops with melted butter and serve warm.
Notes
- Use very cold butter and buttermilk for the best rise and flakiness.
- Do not overwork the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
- Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven.
