Description

These fluffy and delicious homemade biscuits are golden on the outside and tender on the inside, perfect for breakfast or as a side to any meal.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Make a well in the center and pour in the cold buttermilk. Stir just until combined; do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and gently knead 4-5 times. Pat into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Cut biscuits using a round cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet close together for softer sides or apart for crispier edges.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  8. Brush the tops with melted butter and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use very cold butter and buttermilk for the best rise and flakiness.
  • Do not overwork the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated in the oven.
