Description

These fluffy and delicious homemade biscuits are buttery, tender, and perfect for breakfast or as a side to any meal. Quick to prepare and even quicker to disappear!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk, cold
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Cut in the cold cubed butter using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir just until combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle. Fold the dough in half and pat it down again. Repeat this 2-3 times for flaky layers.
  6. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  8. Brush with melted butter if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use cold butter and buttermilk to achieve the best rise and texture.
  • Don’t overwork the dough; it can make the biscuits tough.
  • You can freeze cut-out biscuit dough and bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the bake time.
