Description

This easy Serbian Moussaka recipe is a comforting and hearty dish made with layers of sliced potatoes and seasoned ground beef, baked in a creamy egg and milk mixture. It’s a beloved Balkan classic perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 45 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • Butter or oil for greasing the baking dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a baking dish with butter or oil.
  2. In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and sauté until soft.
  3. Add the ground beef to the skillet, season with salt, pepper, and paprika, and cook until browned. Set aside.
  4. Peel and thinly slice the potatoes.
  5. Layer half of the potatoes in the bottom of the baking dish.
  6. Spread the cooked ground beef mixture over the potato layer.
  7. Top with the remaining potato slices.
  8. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, and flour until smooth. Pour evenly over the layered ingredients in the baking dish.
  9. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are tender.
  10. Let the moussaka cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef with ground pork or a beef-pork mix for richer flavor.
