Description

Easy Overnight French Toast is a make-ahead breakfast casserole that soaks bread in a rich custard overnight and bakes into a golden, fluffy delight by morning.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Arrange slices of French bread in the dish, slightly overlapping.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
  5. Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) the next morning.
  7. Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
  8. Drizzle melted butter over the top and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and set.
  9. Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit if desired.

Notes

  • Use slightly stale bread to better absorb the custard.
  • Can be customized with fruit or nuts added before baking.
  • Leftovers can be stored in the fridge and reheated.
