- 1 loaf French bread, sliced
- 8 large eggs
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 3/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
Instructions
- Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
- Arrange slices of French bread in the dish, slightly overlapping.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all pieces are soaked.
- Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate overnight.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) the next morning.
- Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes.
- Drizzle melted butter over the top and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until golden and set.
- Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh fruit if desired.
Notes
- Use slightly stale bread to better absorb the custard.
- Can be customized with fruit or nuts added before baking.
- Leftovers can be stored in the fridge and reheated.
