Description

Fluffy, buttery, and easy-to-make homemade biscuits perfect for breakfast or as a side to any meal.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter (cold and cut into small cubes)
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk (cold)
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter (for brushing, optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add the cold butter to the dry ingredients and cut it in using a pastry cutter or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Pour in the cold buttermilk and stir just until combined; do not overmix.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently pat it into a 1-inch thick rectangle.
  6. Fold the dough in half and pat it out again. Repeat this 2–3 times to create flaky layers.
  7. Cut out biscuits using a round cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet, close together for softer sides or spaced apart for crispier edges.
  8. Bake for 12–15 minutes or until golden brown.
  9. Brush tops with melted butter if desired and serve warm.

Notes

  • Use cold butter and buttermilk for the flakiest biscuits.
  • Do not overmix the dough to avoid tough biscuits.
  • Biscuits can be frozen before or after baking.
