Description
Tender apple slices are simmered with cinnamon, sugar, and butter for a cozy, lightly sweetened treat that’s perfect as a topping or side dish.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 apples (such as Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Gala), peeled, cored, and sliced
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- 2 tbsp water
Instructions
- Peel, core, and slice the apples evenly.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the apple slices and cook for 2-3 minutes until they start to soften.
- Sprinkle in the brown sugar, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Stir to coat the apples evenly.
- Add lemon juice and a splash of water to help the apples cook and release their juices.
- Cover and simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender.
- If desired, dissolve cornstarch in a little water and stir into the skillet. Cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Use maple syrup instead of sugar for a richer flavor.
- Add raisins or chopped nuts for extra texture.
- Stir in a splash of vanilla extract after cooking for added depth.
- Swap apples for pears for a seasonal twist.
