Description
A classic comfort food, Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast (also known as “SOS”) features savory dried beef in a rich, creamy white sauce, served over crispy toast. It’s quick, hearty, and perfect for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Ingredients
-
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
-
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
-
2 cups whole milk
-
1 jar (2.5 ounces) dried beef, sliced into strips
-
1/4 teaspoon black pepper (or to taste)
-
4-6 slices of toasted bread
Instructions
-
In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.
-
Whisk in the flour to form a roux. Cook for about 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly.
-
Slowly pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps.
-
Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and cook until thickened, about 5 minutes.
-
Add the sliced dried beef and stir to combine.
-
Season with black pepper to taste.
-
Simmer for another 2–3 minutes, stirring occasionally.
-
Serve hot over slices of toasted bread.
Notes
-
Rinse or soak the dried beef briefly in water if it tastes too salty.
-
For a creamier version, substitute half of the milk with heavy cream.
-
Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or paprika for a little kick.
