Description

Chicken Jalfrezi is a popular Indian curry dish made with tender chicken pieces stir-fried with bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and aromatic spices in a thick, flavorful sauce.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 2 fresh tomatoes, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat oil in a large skillet or pan over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened.
  2. Add garlic and ginger, sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned on all sides.
  4. Stir in cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Add chopped tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir well to combine and cook for 5 minutes until tomatoes break down.
  6. Add bell peppers and water, cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and sauce thickens.
  7. Uncover and stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes to reduce the sauce if needed.
  8. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.

Notes

  • Adjust chili powder to control the spice level.
  • Use pre-cooked chicken for a faster version.
  • Tastes even better the next day after flavors develop.
