Description
Chicken Jalfrezi is a popular Indian curry dish made with tender chicken pieces stir-fried with bell peppers, onions, tomatoes, and aromatic spices in a thick, flavorful sauce.

- 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into chunks
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- 1 large onion, sliced
- 1 green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, sliced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
- 2 fresh tomatoes, chopped
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder (adjust to taste)
- Salt to taste
- 1/4 cup water
- Fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Heat oil in a large skillet or pan over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened.
- Add garlic and ginger, sauté for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add chicken pieces and cook until lightly browned on all sides.
- Stir in cumin, coriander, turmeric, chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Cook for 1–2 minutes.
- Add chopped tomatoes and tomato paste. Stir well to combine and cook for 5 minutes until tomatoes break down.
- Add bell peppers and water, cover and simmer for 10–12 minutes, or until chicken is cooked through and sauce thickens.
- Uncover and stir-fry for another 2–3 minutes to reduce the sauce if needed.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.
Notes
- Adjust chili powder to control the spice level.
- Use pre-cooked chicken for a faster version.
- Tastes even better the next day after flavors develop.
