Description

Chicken Chow Mein is a popular Chinese takeout dish made with stir-fried noodles, tender chicken, crisp vegetables, and the ultimate savory-sweet chow mein sauce. It’s quick, easy, and better than takeout!

Ingredients

  • 8 oz chow mein noodles
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce (for marinating chicken)
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch (for marinating chicken)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 2 cups shredded cabbage
  • 1 cup julienned carrots
  • 1/2 cup sliced bell peppers
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated
  • For the sauce:
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  1. Cook chow mein noodles according to package instructions, drain, and set aside.
  2. In a bowl, mix sliced chicken with 2 tbsp soy sauce and 1 tbsp cornstarch. Let marinate for 10 minutes.
  3. In a small bowl, whisk together all sauce ingredients and set aside.
  4. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add chicken and stir-fry until cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  5. Add remaining 1 tbsp oil to the pan. Add garlic, ginger, and vegetables. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.
  6. Return chicken to the pan. Add cooked noodles and pour sauce over the top.
  7. Toss everything together until evenly coated and heated through.
  8. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve immediately.

Notes

  • Use pre-cut stir-fry vegetable mix for convenience.
  • Add chili flakes or sriracha for heat.
  • Can substitute chicken with shrimp or tofu.
