Description

Soft and chewy sugar cookies with a crisp edge and tender center, perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
  • Extra sugar for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth and fluffy.
  4. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract (if using).
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until combined.
  6. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls, then roll in sugar before placing on baking sheets.
  7. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar and lightly brush with buttermilk.
  8. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges are just golden.
  9. Allow cookies to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a crisper cookie, bake a minute longer.
  • Cookies will appear soft but set as they cool.
  • Store in an airtight container to maintain chewiness.
