Description

These savory cheesy thumbprint appetizers are buttery, crumbly, and packed with sharp cheddar flavor. The surprise center of sweet and spicy hot pepper jelly adds the perfect contrast. They’re easy to make and ideal for parties, holidays, or anytime you need a crowd-pleasing bite-sized snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little heat)

  • 1/3 cup hot pepper jelly

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a medium bowl, beat together the softened butter and shredded cheddar cheese until well combined.

  3. Mix in the flour, salt, and cayenne pepper (if using) until a soft dough forms.

  4. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and place them on the prepared baking sheet, about 2 inches apart.

  5. Use your thumb or the back of a spoon to gently press an indentation into the center of each ball.

  6. Fill each thumbprint with about 1/2 teaspoon of hot pepper jelly.

  7. Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

  8. Let cool slightly on the baking sheet before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • You can use any kind of pepper jelly—red, green, or even pineapple-habanero for a fun twist.

  • These can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  • For extra cheesy flavor, sprinkle a little more cheddar on top before baking.
