Description

A rich, buttery caramel sauce that’s perfect for topping ice cream, cakes, coffee, and more. This simple homemade version offers a luxurious texture and deep, toasty sweetness.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 tbsp salted butter, cut into pieces
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp sea salt (optional for salted caramel)

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the sugar while stirring constantly with a heat-resistant spatula or wooden spoon.
  2. Continue cooking and stirring until the sugar turns a deep amber color.
  3. Carefully add the butter and stir until fully melted and combined.
  4. Slowly pour in the heavy cream while stirring. Be cautious as the mixture will bubble vigorously.
  5. Let the sauce simmer for 1–2 minutes, then remove from heat.
  6. Stir in vanilla extract and salt if using.
  7. Allow the caramel sauce to cool slightly before using, or store for later.

Notes

  • Add a splash of bourbon or rum for a boozy twist.
  • Infuse with cinnamon or espresso powder for unique flavor notes.
  • Use brown sugar instead of granulated sugar for a deeper molasses flavor.
  • Make it dairy-free with coconut cream and vegan butter.
