Description
Bananas Foster is a classic New Orleans dessert featuring bananas sautéed in a buttery brown sugar sauce, flambéed with rum, and served over vanilla ice cream.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 bananas, sliced diagonally
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup dark rum
- 2 tbsp banana liqueur
- 4 scoops vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Slice the bananas into thick diagonal pieces and set aside.
- In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
- Add the brown sugar and stir until it dissolves and forms a thick sauce.
- Stir in the cinnamon and vanilla extract.
- Add the sliced bananas to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, spooning the sauce over them.
- Carefully add the dark rum and banana liqueur to the pan.
- Tilt the pan slightly to ignite the alcohol, or use a long lighter to flambé. Let the flames subside naturally.
- Once the flame goes out, remove from heat.
- Serve the bananas and sauce immediately over scoops of vanilla ice cream.
Notes
- Add chopped pecans or walnuts for a crunchy texture.
- Substitute banana liqueur with extra rum or orange liqueur.
- Use plantains for a firmer, less sweet alternative.
- Serve over pound cake or waffles for a heartier dessert.
