Description

Authentic Swedish Meatballs served with a rich and creamy gravy, perfect for a comforting meal that brings classic Scandinavian flavors to your table.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 lb ground pork
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp ground allspice
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp butter (for frying)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine breadcrumbs and milk. Let sit for 5 minutes to absorb.
  2. Add ground beef, ground pork, chopped onion, egg, allspice, nutmeg, salt, and pepper to the breadcrumb mixture. Mix until well combined.
  3. Form into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter.
  4. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Fry the meatballs in batches until browned on all sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.
  5. In the same skillet, add flour to the drippings and whisk to form a roux. Cook for 1-2 minutes.
  6. Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth, then add the heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Simmer until thickened.
  7. Return meatballs to the skillet and simmer in the gravy for 5-10 minutes.
  8. Serve hot, traditionally with mashed potatoes or lingonberry sauce.

Notes

  • Use a mixture of pork and beef for the best flavor and texture.
  • Don’t overcrowd the pan when frying meatballs to ensure even browning.
  • Adjust spices to taste if desired.
