Description

Au Gratin Potatoes are a classic comfort food dish made with thinly sliced potatoes layered in a rich, creamy cheese sauce and baked to golden perfection. A perfect side for holiday dinners or hearty meals.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to make a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in milk and cream, cooking until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, and cheddar cheese. Cook until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Pour over half the cheese sauce.
  6. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce. Sprinkle Parmesan cheese over the top.
  7. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20-25 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  8. Let cool slightly before serving. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for evenly thin potato slices.
  • Yukon Gold potatoes can be used as a substitute for russet potatoes.
  • You can add a pinch of nutmeg to the sauce for extra depth.
